The latest is this article from the LA Times, in which various traffic experts argue against allowing hybrids into carpool lanes.
It's about congestion people. Yes, I want to fix the air. More importantly, I want a complete overhaul of US energy policy - especially our oil consumption and dependence on the ME. But - California is stuffed to the gills and the freeways are only getting worse. Letting carpool lanes clog with various special interest drivers gives us marginally better air and many extra miles of congested freeways.
