Three is a magic number.
Or so argues this FOP in today's Newsday column. The unrest in Iraq, the violence, will likely escalate under a unified system that forces together the Kurds, Sunni, and Shia. So if they're 3 people happier left alone, why not, well, leave them alone? Divide and create 3 and save ourselves the inevitable loss of 1:
But Iraq is not viable as a unitary country. Already, Kurds, Sunnis and Shia are fighting each other. And, in the meantime, Americans are caught in the crossfire, clinging to an increasingly costly and counterproductive policy of Iraqi "unity." If breakup is inevitable, we should be fostering that split, not fighting against it. Fewer Fallujahs would be one immediate result.
